Live and let die - A systems biology view on cell death
نویسندگان
چکیده
This contribution provides an overview of our work on modelling biological processes focussing on the example of programmed cell death, also called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a molecular programme present in all cells of multi-cellular organisms. It is crucial during development and for cell homoeostasis in the adult. Misregulation is implicated in severe diseases. We review an ordinary differential equation model describing core processes of apoptosis signalling and the idea of viewing the life and death decision as a bistable system. Then, we show how small differences in model parameters can give rise to observed population heterogeneities. Employing a new conceptional modelling framework, we further show how a single model can describe a population and how stable steady states then translate into invariant sets employing a local notion of stability.

Die and let live - programmed cell death in plants.
Cysteine and serine proteases are prominent players in the control of developmental and pathogen-activated cell deaths in plants. Ethylene, salicylic acid, the small G-protein Rac, calcium and reactive oxygen species are recurring mediators of death signaling. Lastly, the mitochondrion has emerged in both plant and animal systems as a 'central depot' that interprets multiple signals and in some...
متن کاملLive or Let Die: CCM2 Provides the Link
TrkA receptors are well known for promoting neuronal cell survival. However, in some neuroblastic tumors, TrkA activation can instead induce apoptosis. In this issue of Neuron, Harel et al. identify CCM2 as a mediator of TrkA-dependent cell death, suggesting that CCM2 is a distinctive type of tumor suppressor that modulates tyrosine kinase signaling.

متن کاملA Quantitative Study of the Effect of Electroporation on the Electropermeability and Cell Survival
Introduction: Electroporation is a practical technique used to transport the molecules across the cell membrane. The utilization of fluorescent molecules is the method widely used to evaluate the electropermeability of cell membrane as a result of pulse application. It is also possible to use mathematical methods to predict the changes caused in cell electropermeability as a result of the chang...
متن کاملMorphological Features of Cell Death Through Microscopic View
Cells are active components in their environment and constantly adjusting their performance to improve extracellular milieu changing. This approach is reflected their tends of maintaining intracellular homeostasis. When the cells encounter stress or pathologic stimuli, they can undergo a new manner (adaptation) and new steady state for achieving viability and function. If the external stress is...
